VDMA X EAC at German Centre Shanghai – 120 Guests, One Key Question: What’s Next for Business in China?

German Centre Shanghai recently hosted an evening dedicated to the current business climate in China and the priorities expected to shape the country’s 15th Five-Year Plan.

Daniel Yoo from VDMA China presented the latest business climate survey among German machinery companies operating in China. The results pointed to a gradual improvement, with overall sentiment returning to positive territory after several years of negative assessments. At the same time, the survey highlighted significant differences between individual sectors.

Particularly positive developments were reported in power transmission engineering, electronics, solar and battery production, construction equipment, robotics, automation, and electrical automation. The findings underline that, while the overall environment remains challenging, selected industries continue to offer strong growth potential.

Daniel Berger from EAC International Consulting then provided an outlook on China’s 15th Five-Year Plan. He outlined the main areas likely to guide China’s economic and industrial development in the coming years, including technological self-reliance, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, robotics, semiconductors, green transformation, and industrial upgrading.

The evening continued with a panel discussion moderated by Daisy Zhu, Deputy Executive Director of the German Chamber of Commerce in China – East China. The panel brought together senior executives from different industries:

While China continues to present attractive opportunities in selected future-oriented sectors, companies also face increasing competition, changing market conditions, and growing pressure to adapt. Long-term commitment, resilience, and a clear strategic position remain essential.
